Whenever a significant honors show approaches, one notices an outcry for introducing fresh award types to honor underappreciated efforts and fill the passions of fans dedicated to specific genres.
My colleague previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. So would board games, which is someone's personal cause. But they will have to forgive me for pushing forward because like all blinkered fanatics, I have a cast-iron argument backing this proposal remains most pressing and significant. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create a category for puzzle games.
Organizing Gaming Categories
Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; it remains highly personal, and typically start arguments and end in fuzzy definitions. It's understandable that movie academies steer clear of genre categories. But it is an essential concession within the realm of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.
Present Award Structure
The major gaming awards offer these award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these classifications successfully include a lot of ground, allowing placement for most games within them.
This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. No suitable classification appears to put them. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: structural challenges of one title, intense tile-matching from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles from additional release. What category would fit them among existing types? Nowhere, that’s where.
Acknowledgment Issues
Numerous examples exist of brilliant puzzle games launched regularly lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, except when they manage to fit classification types such as Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging Indie races.
- An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated completely that year
- Another imaginative release missed out during that ceremony
- Well-received sorting experience got ignored that year
- Limited numbers of logic titles barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications
Importance of Logic Titles
Commonly they're compact experiences, yet the craft behind logic titles carries substantial weight. Well-known matching games stand as most engaged experiences in the world and have been for over a decade.
The iconic tile-matching title rivals well-known building titles competing to become most purchased experience; it additionally competes as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, while interacting with diverse game types.
Proposal and Rationale
Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. One could readily select a field of five interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — perhaps, with difficulty, given the need to exclude many worthy titles.
To emphasize again, these are games lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers function at the demanding boundary game development, producing among the purest expressions of the video game form. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
