Minister States MoD Investigating Potential Threat from Vehicles from China, with Staff Told to Refrain from Confidential Discussions in Cars.

An defense official has stated that the Ministry of Defence is actively examining the possible security risks posed by Chinese-made cars, while staff have been instructed to refrain from discussing classified information in all cars.

Security Guidance for MoD Staff

In a recently aired interview on a radio station, Luke Pollard addressed reports that MoD staff have been told not to discuss secret material while travelling in Chinese cars.

He stated that the ministry is “investigating” Chinese vehicles within its vehicle pools, however emphasised that security is a concern in all modern cars.

Our department has a collection of thousands of vehicles in the MoD and those vehicles account for a tiny fraction.
But whether you’re driving a vehicle from China or a non-Chinese car, our instruction to our staff is not to plug Ministry of Defence technology into their car, not to have conversations at a secret classification in any vehicle, because of the increasing risks of eavesdropping that exist in all automobile, to only have those confidential talks in protected areas. This is a wise and reasonable thing for everyone worried about safety.

After it was put to him that it would be wise for the MoD to cease using every Chinese vehicles, Pollard responded: ‘That’s precisely what we’re investigating at the moment.”

Broader Defence Background

The announcement comes as reports from Scandinavian countries have warned the United Kingdom to the presence of dual-use kill switches in Chinese buses, which could allow the Chinese government to disable public transport and bring disruption to transport systems.

Additionally, a Russian spy ship was reportedly directing lasers at Royal Air Force pilots, described as a “highly dangerous” act by defence officials.

The wider security environment underscores the significance of strong protocols and vigilance in every areas of government operations, including transport usage to discussions habits.
